Malta international Haley Bugeja has continued to prove her star quality after being named one of ten players to watch in the women’s game by UEFA on Monday.
The 16-year-old, who plies her trade in Italy with Sassuolo, has been on fire since her move from Mgarr United five months ago. The forward has already scored six goals for the club, with a brace on her debut against Napoli Ladies.
Bugeja was the youngest of the group of players listed.
Bugeja was featured especially for her record-breaking feat with the Malta National Team back in November when she became the youngest player to score a hattrick in a UEFA qualifier, a feat formerly achieved by Julie Fleeting in 1997. This was in Malta’s 4-0 win over Georgia on November 26.
Bugeja had been held back from being called up for Mark Gatt’s squad due to her young age before the second half of qualifiers, but has surely made up for her time in waiting with a massive boost which even led to Malta to get the highest ever finish in a qualifying group.
