Manchester United women in talks with Malta Tourism Authority over Malta training camp

Red Devils to face Birkirkara in a friendly on January 4

The Manchester United women’s team is set to be travel to Malta during the Yuletide period for a short training camp, the Times of Malta can confirm.

Discussions between the Malta Tourism Authority and the English Premier League side are currently at an advanced stage and there is huge optimism that a deal will be reached in the short term.

Sources close to the negotiations said that the plan is that Manchester United women will be travelling to Malta on January 2 and will spend five days training here.

During their stay in Malta, the Manchester United women’s team will also play a friendly match against local champions Birkirkara on January 4 at the Tony Bezzina Stadium. The team will return back to the UK on January 7.

The Malta Tourism Authority have been in talks with the English Premier League club for several months as they looked the men’s side for a training camp to Malta but so far their efforts have failed to come to fruition.

In fact, last summer Manchester United, who were at the time under the charge of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, were expected to come to Malta to play a friendly as part of their pre-season tour.

However, any hopes of a deal to be struck were jolted by the COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions imposed by the UK government who refused to include Malta in its green list and instead the Red Devils ended up playing their final warm-up matches in the UK.

Manchester United’s women’s team have only been formed four seasons ago but the club has made a huge investment to see the side challenge the top teams in the Women’s Super League.

Last season, the United women came close to qualify for the Champions League when they finished fifth in the WSL, just one point behind Arsenal who took the fourth and final spot in UEFA’s most prestigious competition.

This season, the team is under the charge of Mark Skinner and boast several talented players such as skipper Katie Zelem and Ella Toone just to name a few.
