Jose Borg has stepped down from his post at Canadian club FC Manitoba, the Times of Malta can reveal.
The Maltese coach had moved over to Canada and was appointed as coach of FC Manitoba back in March 2021.
He was set to be in charge of the side in the USL League in 2021 but the Canadian-based club had to postpone their participation due to the Covid-19 situation.
Instead, Borg led his club in a series of regional friendlies which saw him chalk up his first win at the helm of the Canadian team.
Borg’s team faced Edmonton Scottish Soccer Club in two friendly games as part of the Exhibition Summer Series that replaced Manitoba’s league commitments.
In the first of two friendlies, Borg guided Manitoba to their first victory – 4-2 – under his guidance with former Floriana and Tarxien Rainbows player Michele Paolucci grabbing two goals for Borg’s team.
FC Manitoba are due to start their USL League Two campaign at the end of May after undergoing a full pre-season with coach Borg, who led them to a 1-0 and a 6-0 victory in their warm-up friendlies ahead of the 2022 season.
Despite the lack of action during 2021, coach Borg’s work at the club did not go unnoticed as he drew the interest of the local media as well.
In fact, CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) joined the Maltese coach in an interview which shed light on his long journey from Malta to Canada during these difficult times due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Borg, who recently obtained his UEFA Pro License, has been in charge of Tarxien Rainbows and St Andrews in men’s football having also been an established coach in the women’s game in Malta.
