Rachel Cuschieri stays in Serie A after joining Sampdoria Women

Rachel Cuschieri will continue her career in Italy’s top-flight after putting pen to paper on a two-year contract with Sampdoria Women.

Cuschieri, 30, spent the past two seasons at Lazio with whom she won the Serie B title in the 2020/2021 season and made her Serie A debut during the past campaign.

Despite a late rally, Lazio failed to salvage their Serie A status in a season in which Cuschieri still managed to stage several solid showings. She scored two goals as well against Napoli and Sassuolo.

Overall at the Biancoceleste, Cuschieri played 45 games and scored four goals.

The Malta international will be now joining Sampdoria Women who will be playing in the Serie A for just the second time after introducing themselves to the female game last season.

Under the guidance of coach Antonio Cincotta, Sampdoria impressed in their first season as they finished 6th in the 12-team championship with 31 points.

The squad started their pre-season preparations in Bogliasco and Ronzone ahead of the new campaign that is set to launch on August 27, with 10 teams set to face off each other in a new format of the Serie A championship.

Sampdoria will face Sassuolo away in their league opener.

Cuschieri will be one of the two Malta internationals that will be playing in the upcoming Serie A season as Emma Lipman will be staying for another year at newly-promoted Como.

Como’s opening game of the season will see them host Italian champions Juventus.

Roma, Fiorentina, Milan, Inter, Pomigliano and Parma – who took over from Empoli, are the other Serie A teams.
