Malta international Ylenia Bonett will be making the next step in her basketball career as she moves to Iceland to join Snaefell Karfa in Division One – the country’s second tier behind the Premier League.
With this move, confirmed by her agents at DC Sports, the former Hibernians guard joins an ever-growing list of Maltese players plying their trade abroad.
While Bonett has been one of the Paolite club’s stars for a number of seasons despite her young age, the boost of making her debut with the Malta National Team over the summer in Cyprus has been a major boost to her stock.
This summer, the women’s team one-upped their final ranking in the tournament, going home with a bronze medal. Bonett, 19, was part of coach Angela Adamoli’s rotation but fit right into the squad despite it being her first outing at senior level. Bonett was also part of various youth teams including the Under-16 and Under-18 Malta teams.
Last season, Bonett was on form especially at club level as she was an essential part of then-coach Norbert Borg’s side that finished top seed in the regular season, losing out in the playoff finals to eventual title winners Caffe Moak Luxol.
Snaefell Karfa have been a staple of the league’s Premier division but following a rough post-COVID-19 season in 2020-21, when the team finished in the penultimate seventh position, the club announced that it would not take part in the division and relegate itself to Division One where it remains today.
