Anderlecht sack Mazzu as coach after disastrous start to season

Belgian giants Anderlecht sacked Felice Mazzu as their manager on Monday following a 3-1 defeat by Standard Liege, a match cut short because of crowd trouble.

After the opening 14 games of the season, Anderlecht have amassed just 16 points, their worst start to a year since the 1930s.

Mazzu, 56, was named coach of the year last season after having led Royale Union Saint-Gilloise to second in the table.

He took over from Vincent Kompany in the summer after the former Manchester City skipper went to Burnley.

He becomes the seventh coach to be sacked since the start of the season and his place will be temporarily taken by youth coach Robin Veldman.
