Gżira United have an agreement in place to sign Fgura United’s attacking midfielder Ewertton for next season.
The Maroons are looking to strengthen a number of positions during the January transfer window as they seek to step up their push for a place in the UEFA club competitions this summer.
Last weekend, Gżira United dropped two precious points in a 1-1 draw with Gudja United, which left the club in second place, 11 points behind leaders Ħamrun Spartans.
However, with the race for European spots hotting up, with eight teams battling for two spots, the Maroons are looking to add more quality to their squad.
Ewertton’s contract with Fgura United expires at the end of the season and according to FIFA rules the Maroons could have opened talks with the 25-year-old.
“I can confirm that Gżira United have an agreement in place with Brazilian attacking midfielder Ewertton,” Marlon Galea, Gżira United’s team manager confirmed to the Times of Malta.
“At the moment, the player will arrive at our club next summer on a three-year deal. However, we are trying to bring the player this month as we believe he can give us something different from what we have but at the moment, Fgura do not want to let him go now.”
Ewertton has enjoyed an impressive campaign with Fgura United this season as the Brazilian made 17 appearances with the club and scored four goals.
Galea said that the club have a lot of midfielders on their books and need to sell two of them this month so they can make space for other reinforcements in other areas of the pitch.
“At the moment we have eight midfielders in our squad, and with our playing philosophy we can only field three of them in our starting formation,” Galea said.
“So we believe that we need to sell two of our midfielders so we can strengthen other areas in our squad. Riccardo Correa is one player that we have put on the transfer market. Correa has only four months left on his contract and there are a number of Premier League clubs who are showing interest in his signature.
“At the moment, we have 11 foreigners on our books and we need to open another spot so that we can bring in two foreigners this month, so that is why Correa was put on the transfer list.
“The other midfielder that we have put on the market is Clive Gauci. He, too, has another four months left on his contract and has turned down the club’s offer of a new contract as he wants more regular football.
“I am aware that he too has some offers from clubs from the Premier League and the Challenge League so hopefully a deal is done this month.”
Galea added that Gżira United are also working hard to bring in a new forward this month and negotiations are still ongoing in a bid to strike a deal.
