Young Maltese cyclists Luke Borg and Jacob Schembri are currently in Spain for another training camp with Italian professional cycling team EOLO Kometa.
Borg and Schembri have been on the radar of EOLO Kometa since the Italian team started a partnership agreement with VisitMalta last year.
Since then the young Maltese cyclists have been undergoing a continuous training programme with the Italian professional team who feel that both Borg and Schembri have the potential of realising their dream of becoming professional cyclists.
Borg and Schembri joined the Italian team in Spain on February 11 and for the past five days, they have been undergoing a continuous training programme aimed at helping them to continually develop their talent.
This is the first time that two Maltese cyclists have been engaged by a professional cycling team.
“In view of our partnership agreement with VisitMalta, apart from promoting Malta as a beautiful country and a perfect tourist destination, we are also keen to work with some young talented Maltese cyclists in our camps in Spain and Italy,” said Francisco Contador EOLO KOMETA general manager.
“It is our ambition to try and find individual talents and nurture them through our youth structure so that they can realise their dream of becoming professional cyclists.
“With this goal in mind, we have invited Jacob and Luke for this training camp with our Under 23 team that is being held in Spain. During the camp we are evaluating their progress since our last training camp in December, when they were with us, to continue the work started.
“Once we feel that they have reached a good level of performance, we are planning to integrate them as part of our team and give them the opportunity to compete with us in the 2023 racing calendar.”
