
Malta’s top female tennis player Francesca Curmi boosted her preparations for the upcoming Games of the Small States of Europe that will be held on our island when she won the ITF Tournament in Tossa De Mar in Spain.
On Sunday, Curmi produced a strong display to see off home player Georgina Garcia-Perez in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6, in one hour and 35 minutes of play.
It was another impressive display for the Maltese player who has been showing steady progress on the ITF tour this year.
Curmi’s victory in Spain caps a very positive week for her which has seen her winning all her matches without dropping a set.
In the first round, Curmi overcame South African player Wozuko Mdlulwa 6-1 6-0.
The Maltese player then broke little sweat to see off Spain’s Yvonne Cavalle-Reimers 6-1 6-2to book her place in the quarter-finals.
In the last eight, Curmi had the better of eighth seed Lucie Nguyen Tan 6-3 6-2.
In the semi-finals, Curmi was scheduled to play against Federica Di Sarra, but the Italian player pulled out of the match, awarding a walk-over to Curmi.
Curmi was one of two Maltese players in the draw at Tossa De Mar.
Helene Pellicano was handed a very tough draw when she faced top seed Daria Snigur, of Ukraine, in the opening round and she lost a thrilling match 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
