Floriana FC part ways with coach Gianluca Atzori

Floriana have parted ways with coach Gianluca Atzori, the Premier League club announced in a statement.

The Italian coach had been at the helm of the Greens for the past two seasons and enjoyed a very successful first season in charge.

In fact, under the guidance of Atzori, Floriana managed to challenge Hibernians to the Premier League title in season 2021-22, only to finish in the runners-up spot, and then went on to win the FA Trophy, when they beat neighbours and fierce rivals Valletta in the final.

However, this season Floriana struggled for performances as the team failed to challenge for the main domestic honours and also were never in the running for a place in the UEFA club competitions.

In the end, the team finished in a disappointing seventh place on 37 points, level with Valletta FC.

“Floriana Football Club can confirm that head-coach Gianluca Atzori has left his position as head coach of the club with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement.

“The club would like to express its gratitude to Mr. Atzori for his efforts during his time with the club.

“The process of appointing a new head coach is already underway and the Club will update supporters in due course.”

Floriana are currently scouring the market to appoint a new head coach in the coming days or weeks.

The Times of Malta can confirm that the Greens are keen on Gżira United coach Darren Abdilla, who, however, has another year left on his contract with the Maroons.

Should they fail to secure the services of Abdilla, it is likely that they will bring in another foreign coach.
