Aldrin Cassar has been elected Athletics Malta president for the next twelve months after an Extraordinary General Meeting held at the Head Office of the Association at the Matthew Micallef St John Stadium in Marsa.

Cassar, who for the past two years served as Secretary General of Athletics Malta was uncontested for the election, but asked the Council members for a vote confirming his appointment. A unanimous vote confirmed him to the new post.

The new chief has extensive experience in the sporting scene and has been involved in sports throughout his life. He obtained a B.Ed in Physical Education from the University of Malta. As an athlete, Cassar played football for more than two decades in the Maltese and Gozitan football leagues where he won several honours with Victoria Hotspurs FC and Mosta FC. As an administrator, besides his role with Athletics Malta, for the past five years, he served as the Secretary-General of the Malta Employees Sports Association.

Addressing Council members after the vote, besides expressing gratitude for the trust expressed through the vote, Cassar shared his priorities for the year ahead. He described the success achieved by athletics in GSSE 2023, where 15 gold medals were won, as the starting point and insisted that the association’s biggest challenge was to not only maintain this standard but to strengthen it in the years ahead.

“For this to happen, we need to continue investing strongly in our athletes, coaches, officials as well as in our infrastructure so that we continue to elevate the quality of Malese athletics”, he explained.

The new president also addressed the role of the several athletics clubs in Malta and Gozo that host hundreds of athletes of all ages and abilities, from elite to amateur sportspersons, and expressed the commitment of Athletics Malta to work hand in hand with them to pursue further growth for this sport while offering more and better opportunities for all those involved in the years ahead.
